༺ WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY!

theme- ecosystem restoration!

World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5th around the world it helps spread awareness about protecting and taking care of our environment. This initiative was started by the United Nations and is a week-long celebration. This year's theme calls for urgent action to restore the damaged ecosystems and to conserve the environment.

Ecosystem restoration means assisting in the recovery of ecosystems that have been degraded or destroyed and conserving the ecosystems that are still intact. Healthier ecosystems, with richer biodiversity, yield greater benefits such as; more fertile soil, a bigger yield of timber and fish, and larger stores of greenhouse gasses. Ecosystem restoration at a global scale is important to help restore our earth and prevent the ecological crisis that we are currently facing.
protect the biodiversity for future generations!

═.★ Awareness regarding eco-destruction and a short overview on how to restore it! ★.═

。ೃ࿔₊• Introduction: ˚ ೃ࿔₊• 。ೃ࿔₊• How we can help eco-restoration: ˚ ೃ࿔₊•
restoration can happen in many ways, a few are; through actively planting or by removing pressures so that nature can recover on its own. It's not always possible or desirable to return an ecosystem to it's original state as we still need farmland and infrastructure on land that was once forest. In order to tackle such a situation, society and mankind need to adapt to a changing climate.planting trees!, repairing & replanting; wetlands, creek beds, forest, etc., reducing waste products, production of usage and reduction of plastic products, discouraging deforestation!, launching eco-restoration programs, instigate eco-restoration awareness, eradicating invasive species, take care of the environment!, participate in cleaning campaigns, reduce pollution!

⁀➷ Animals that have been affected by ecosystem degradation! ✧・

The destruction of natural habitats by the means of ecosystem degradation leads to reduction of population size and abundance, change of genetic diversity, and extinction of wildlife.

Two animals that have been affected on a major scale by ecosystem degradation are listed below;

  • Polar Bear; Due to the dwindling sea ice in its arctic habitat the polar bears are facing an uncertain future. Longer, warmer summers are causing much of the arctic ocean to be ice-free for extended periods of time decreasing the bears access to their primary prey, seals. Consequently, the bears are forced to spend more time on land, while its habitual area is slowly being chipped away to nothingness.

  • Ringed Seal; They are highly dependent on the arctic sea ice and almost never come to land. Warming spring temperatures and early ice breakup are causing nursing pups to be prematurely separated from their mothers. Additionally warmer ocean temperatures are likely to boost seal parasite populations and the forced migration of seals to a more stable ice habitat that will facilitate the spread of the disease, resulting in their decline.

  • The world has already lost 80% of its forest and is continually losing them at a rate of 375 km^2/day.

  • At this current rate of deforestation, 5-10% of tropical forest species will become extinct every decade.

  • 27% of our coral reefs have been destroyed. If the rate continues, the remaining 60% will be gone in 30 years.

  • We are using up 50% more natural resources than the earth can provide. At our current population, we need 1.5 earths, which we do not have.

  • Every year we extract an estimated 55 billion tons of fossil energy, metals, and biomass from the earth.

  • Every hour, 1692 acres of productive dry land becomes desert.
